Yolande Salter

Yolande Salter, 86, of Vilas, passed away June 3, 2013, at the Blowing Rock Hospital. She suffered from Alzheimer's disease for a number of years. Born Nov. 12, 1926, in Montreal, Quebec, she was a daughter of Albert and Marianna Picotte. She was married to David Salter of Vilas.

Yolande was an accomplished classical pianist with a Bachelor of Music degree. She was featured on music programs by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in her early life. She played by ear, and was a hit when asked to play in piano bars.

Yolande had a great joie de vivre, and was dearly loved by her husband, children, grandchildren and friends. She was a proficient seamstress who made her own clothes, was an ardent skier and tennis player, and loved bicycling and long walks with her dogs.

Yolande had four children by her first husband, James McKenna of Beaconsfield, Quebec. They are Nancy Wendt of Newport Beach, Calif., Christiane McKenna-Clout, of Port Hope, Ontario, Canada, Keith McKenna of Comox, British Columbia, and Colleen McKenna Fisher of Frisco. Her grandchildren are Stephanie Swanson and Andrea Tobin of San Diego, Calif., and Jeffrey Vaughn Clout of Port Hope, Ontario.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Therese Belanger of Perce, Quebec and Pierette Denault of Lisbon, Portugal; and brother, Albert Picotte of Valois, Quebec.

In recent years, she lived in Westmount, Quebec, Governors Harbour, Eleuthera, Bahamas, and Vilas.

A family gathering to celebrate her life was held at the family home in Vilas.

Suggested charities are the Humane Society and the Alzheimer's Association.
