Wilburn George Burgin
Wilburn George Burgin, 91, of Boone, formerly of Newton, passed away on May 19, 2013, at Watauga Medical Center.
Born on Nov. 2, 1921, in McCormick County, he was the son of the late Joseph Edward and Hettie L. Mosteller Burgin. Mr. Burgin was a veteran of the United States Army and served in Rhineland Central Europe in World War II, earning the Eamet Service Medal with two bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal Distinguished Unit Badge, Presidential Unit Citation, and World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of Mt. View Baptist Church, Hickory. He enjoyed a career as a truck driver with Carolina Freight, Associated Transport Inc., Lipe Motors, and others.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Ruby Rosalia Lindsay Burgin; brother, James "J.E." Edward Burgin; and sisters, Flora Mae McNeily, Daisy Adaline Lail, Delma Vules Wycoff, Zelda Gertrude Evans, Clara Lee Kirby, and Earleen Marie Penley.
Left to cherish his memory are his son, Wilburn "Will" George Burgin Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Boone; granddaughter, Shelley Annette Burgin Moser and husband, Todd, of Clayton; and great-granddaughters, Avery Nicole Moser and Jordan Grace Moser, both of Clayton; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A special thanks is given by the family to the staff of Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation of Boone for the excellent care given during the past two and one half years.
A service of remembrance will be held 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Harry Andrews officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park with Military Rites.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013, at the funeral home.
