Wayne Montague Garrett
Born in Charlotte on April 14, 1947, he was the first child of Montague Wayne Garrett and Katherine McLean Garrett.
Garrett graduated summa cum laude from Woodberry Forest in 1965, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in business administration degree from Duke University, in 1969.
He was commissioned by the U.S. Army and served as a First Lieutenant in the Vietnam War.After his discharge in 1972, he joined his father in the furniture industry culminating with his role as a founder of Overnight Sofa Corporation in Longview.
Garrett married Emily Nifong Garrett, the love of his life, on Dec. 21, 1968. She survives along with their three children, Amy Garrett Johnson of Hickory, Matthew Wayne Garrett of Valle Crucis, and Katherine Anna Garrett of Hickory.
Garrett was known for his honest and incredibly generous nature that was always quick with a kind word and a helping hand. His determination in the face of adversity was inspiring and will always be remembered.
In addition to his wife and children, Garrett is survived by his siblings, Daryl Garrett of Raleigh and Vickie Byler of Raleigh; and grandchildren, Benjamin Johnson, Emily Grace Johnson, William Garrett, and Isabelle Garrett.
Garrett was preceded in death by his mother and father.
The family received friends 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Bass Smith Funeral Home in Hickory. A funeral service was held2 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2013, at New Hope Moravian Church in Newton, with the Rev. Betty A. Helms and the Rev. T. Field Russell, where Garrett was a devoted and active member for 29 years. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery.
