W. DeLane Scott Jr.
W. DeLane Scott Jr., 71, of Farmwood Place, Lenoir, died Thursday, March 21, 2013, at the residence surrounded by his family.
He was born May 31, 1941, in Smyth County, Va., to the late Worley DeLane Scott and Roberta Slagle Scott Hayton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sons, Sean Michael and Kyle DeLane Scott; and bothers-in-law, Sherman Bales and Jerry Watson.
Mr. Scott was a graduate of Marion Senior High in Marion, Va., and Marion Junior College. After serving three years in the U.S. Army, he earned a bachelor of arts degree from Appalachian State University and master of education from UNC Chapel Hill. He retired in 1995 after 26 years with New River Mental Health headquartered in Boone.
DeLane was a passionate golfer and played many rounds at Boone Golf Course and Lenoir Golf Club, where he served on the board.
Survivors include his wife, Susan Diane Vines Scott of the home; stepson, Keith Hall and wife, Hope, of Lenoir; stepdaughter, Keila Blankenship and husband, Chris, of Lenoir; sister, Judy Bales of Smithfield; nephew, Brian Bales and wife, Wendy, of Smithfield; nieces, Dana Wooten and husband, Jack, of Smithfield and Whitney Bales Duea and husband, Jody, of Wrightsville Beach; eight grandchildren, Matthew and wife, Amber, Chris and wife, Mindy, Josh, Shelby, John Luke, Abby, Garrett, and Keegan; and four great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Michael Isaacs.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
