Rowena Ray Atkins

Mrs. Rowena Ray Atkins, 97, of Statesville, passed away Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012. Born in Yancey County, April 24, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Reginald Rudolph Ray and Lucille Wilson Ray.

She was a graduate of Swannanoa High School and attended Mars Hill College. Mrs. Atkins was married to Dr. Stanley Sisco Atkins who died in 1987. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Boone, and for many years was self employed as a swimming instructor. She was a past president of the NC State PTA, and a past president of the Medical Auxiliary Association in Buncombe County.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Sisco; a sister, Billie R. Patton; and a brother, Roy R. Ray.

Mrs. Atkins is survived by one daughter, Patricia "Pat" Honeycutt of Statesville; a son, Dr. William S. Atkins (Sally) of Boone; and grandchildren, Stephany H. Templeton (Tom) of Charlotte, Whit Honeycutt of Statesville, Kristin H. Shields (Randy) of Winston-Salem, Matt Honeycutt (Elizabeth) of Winston-Salem, Laurie Atkins of Boone, Ty Atkins (Anna) of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; one brother, Lawrence M. Ray of Asheville, along with six great grandchildren also survive.

A service to celebrate her life will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, in the Broad Street United Methodist Church Chapel officiated by the Rev. Dr. Michael Gehring. Burial will be held 3 p.m. in the Calvary Episcopal Church Cemetery, Fletcher, on Wednesday with the Rev. Jennifer Bingham officiating.

Memorial may be made to the charity of the donors choice.
