Robert Max Hartzog

Mr. Robert Max Hartzog, 85, of Ferguson, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Reach Center with Pastor Kevin Brown officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in Gap Creek Cemetery in Deep Gap. The family will receive at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, North Wilkesboro, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday night.

Mr. Hartzog was born in Ashe County on June 3, 1928, to Rockford and Ferry Fletcher Hartzog. He was a long-term deacon, Sunday school teacher, and a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. He was also a member of Gideon's International. Mr. Hartzog served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was principal of Mt. Pleasant Elementary School from 1956 until his retirement.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hartzog was preceded in death by a son, Max Edward Hartzog.

Mr. Hartzog is survived by his wife, Mary A. Fairchild Hartzog of the home; two sons, Kent Hartzog and wife, Karla, of Millers Creek and Joe Hartzog and wife, Deborah, of Wilkesboro; three sisters, Murelene Cheek, Anna Belle Henson, Sally Walters, all of Fleetwood; three grandchildren, Adrianne Chillemi, Jessica Hartzog Eneriz, Vanessa Hartzog; three great-grandchildren, Peter James Chillemi, Vivian Marie Chillemi, Elijah Eneriz.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Building Fund, 239 Champion, Mt. Pleasant Road, Wilkesboro, NC 28697, to Gideon's International, Wilkes South Camp, PO Box 323, Wilkesboro, NC 28697, or to Gap Creek Cemetery Fund.
