Robert Lee Martin

Robert Lee Martin, 91, departed his blessed life Sunday, March 3, 2013, at home with his family.

He was born on May 14, 1921, in Winston Salem, the son of William Henry Martin and Jenny Estelle Sledge. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 63 years, Lou Burleson; children, Bill, Susy, Melynda, Cindy and Robby; sister, Mildred Butt of McLean, Va., 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; relatives and friends.

Robert or better known as "Bob" was a man with a profound faith, a curious mind, and a happy heart. As a member of "the greatest generation," he served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He attended Appalachian State Teacher's College on the GI Bill, got his Master's there, and later took additional courses at George Washington University. He was a teacher and administrator in schools from Kinshasa in the Congo to Midway Island in the Pacific, as well as in the outskirts of our national's capital and in Winston-Salem. He also worked for the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington as Assistant Director of Education. He came to Crossnore in the early 70's and worked as Executive Director of The Crossnore School.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Crossnore Presbyterian Church, Crossnore. A pot luck style reception will follow the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Robert L. Martin Scholarship Fund at The Crossnore School, PO Box 249, Crossnore, NC 28616 or Medi Home Hospice, Newland, NC 28616.
