Lee Carter, 62, of Pineola, passed away on Monday, Aug. 26, 2013. Carter was born to the late Frank Carter and Sylvia Lespier Carter, Dec. 4, 1950, in Danville, Va.
Carter was the owner of Linville River Companies which he founded in 1984.
Carter graduated from George Washington High School in Danville, in 1969 where he played center for the football team and was first team All-State in 1968. He went on to graduate from Appalachian State University with a degree in Business that he used to begin his firewood and ice manufacturing business.
Known for his ever present smile, Carter will long be remembered for his love of people and how he always took the time to talk with those he met. He was a tremendous enthusiast of ASU Mountaineer football, hardly ever missing a home or away game. He was an active member of the rock climbing community and was responsible for many first ascents in the Table Rock and Linville Gorge areas. Carter's wide circle of climbing friends will attest to his zest for life, as he never saw a mountain or rock he couldn't climb. His love of climbing, hiking, and camping with his beloved wife and three poodles remained with him until his death.
Carter is survived by his wife, Libby Sherrill Carter; son, Leif Carter of Boone; son and daughter-in-law, Jeb and Jessica Carter of Boone, and his beloved Poodles, Cupcake, Lambchop, and Digby; as well as siblings, Sterling Carter, Anthony Carter, and Carmen Carter.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, in McRae Meadows at Grandfather Mountain with the Rev. H. Stephen Shoemaker officiating. A celebration of his life will follow afterwards at the home residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Appalachian Athletics or Carolina Climbers Coalition Access Fund.
