Born in Boone, a son of Edmund and Hazel Cable Farthing of Vilas, Mr. Farthing retired as a driver with Roadway Express where he received the three million mile safe driving award. He was a member of Truth Missionary Baptist Church for 17 years and was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served with the U.S. Marines.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Shirley Finley Farthing of the home; a son, David Lance Farthing, who is serving with the U.S. Air Force; a brother, Len Farthing of Boone; and two sisters, Debbie Farthing and Patti Hensley, both of Boone. Mr. Farthing was predeceased by a brother, Byron Farthing.
Funeral services were at 4 p.m. Monday, April 15, 2013, at Truth Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Sammy Kay, Sr., the Rev. Sammy Kay, Jr., and the Rev. Dr. Scott Dean officiating.
Visitation was from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday at the church, prior to the service.
Committal services were 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at the Farthing Family Cemetery in Vilas.
