L. D. Cole Sr.

L. D. Cole Sr., 88, of Connelly Springs, passed away on Aug. 20, 2013, at his residence.

Born March 16, 1925, in Watauga County, he was the son of Stanford J. Cole and Allie Belle Adams Cole.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Mabe Cole, and son, L. D. Cole Jr.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Cole was a retired engineer from Centel after 32 years. He was a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Youth Leader. He enjoyed playing guitar and harmonica, as well as woodworking, mainly building furniture and clocks. He also coached little league baseball.

He is survived by his children, Jane Cole Brown of Connelly Springs, Alan Cole and wife, Patti, of Winston Salem, Sue Setzer and husband, Jim, of Connelly Springs; a daughter-in-law, Kay Cole of Mebane; grandchildren, Sandra Davis, Fredrick Rankins, Leslie Brown, Ryan Cole, Ross Cole, Stanford Cole, Christopher Brown, Carrie Cole, Anna Bowland; great-grandchildren, Ethan Davis, Tanner Davis, Gavin Dietz, Macie Brown, Landon Cole, Connor Cole, Lindsay Jane Cole, Lillie McConnell and Cole Bowland.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Connelly Springs with the Rev. Michael Skinner officiating. Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory.

Mr. Cole's grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
