Joe W. Shannon

Joe W. Shannon passed away peacefully on May 13, 2014.
Joe was the youngest son of Margaret S. Shannon and the late Joe F. Shannon of Orange Park, Fla. He is survived by his mother, Margaret Shannon, of Orange Park; brother, Frank (Cherryl) of Orange Park; sister, Peggy S. Day (the Rev. Bill) of Metairie, La.; and numerous nieces and nephews and many precious friends.
Joe graduated from N. B. Forrest High School, Florida State University and Appalachian State University. He was a longtime resident of Boone, N.C., where he was an educator and actively involved in local cultural activities.
Joe loved music, writing and storytelling. Twenty years ago, Joe founded Mountain Home Music, whose purpose was to honor the musicians, dancers, storytellers and poets of the Appalachian region, and served as Executive Director until his retirement this year.
In March 2014, Joe received one of North Carolina's most prestigious honors, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, which is awarded by the governor to individuals who have a proven record of extraordinary service to the state.
Services will be held at 10 a.m., May 27, 2014, in the Jacksonville Memory Gardens Chapel, Orange Park, Fla., with interment following the service. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Mountain Home Music in Boone, N.C., or Haven Hospice of Northeast Florida.
