Jo Ann Absher Corum

Jo Ann Absher Corum, 78, of Boone, passed away Friday, April 18, 2014, at Glenbridge Health Care.
Mrs. Corum is survived by her husband, Dr. Al Corum, of Boone; two sons, Mark Corum and Jeffrey Scott Corum, both of Columbia, S.C.; one sister, Betty Griffin, and husband, Dr. William R. Griffin, of Georgetown, S.C.; one aunt, Paralee Baldwin, of Ashe County; and one uncle, James Horton Absher, of Ashe County.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Emmett W. Absher and Lenna Parlier Absher; and one sister, Jerrie Rae.
She was a magna cum laude graduate from Appalachian State Teacher's college with a degree in english. She taught english in the Miami-Dade County, Fla. public schools. After she returned to Boone in 1970, she worked in the business department at Apalachian State University and as a substitute teacher in the Watauga County Public Schools.
She was active in several clubs and civic organizations in Boone, including the Appalachian Women's Club and OASIS.
She was active in the First Baptist Church of Boone, particularly the Contemporary Ladies Sunday School Class.
Funeral services for Jo Ann Absher Corum were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at First Baptist Church of Boone. The Rev. Roy Dobyns will officiate. The body lay in state from 12:30 until 2 p.m. at the church.
The family received friends from 12:30 until 2 p.m. at the church.
Interment followed at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.
