James Avery Goins, 65, of Boone, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012.

Born April 10, 1947, in Boone, he was a son of Avery Oliver and Lucille Grimes Goins. After graduation from Watauga High School, James joined the U.S. Marine Corp. He retired from the NC Department of Transportation with 31 years service. James was a member of the Mt. Nebo Unity Church in Jonesville where he especially enjoyed the church music and Monday night Bible study in Boone.

Mr. Goins is survived by his wife of 39 years, Andrea Louise Hagler Goins; step-daughter, Monica Denise Williams and husband, Lt. Col. Maury Williams, of Kings Mountain; six sisters, Brenda Whittington of Boone, Cora Cox and husband, Harold, of Galax, Va., Lisa and Shelia Goins, and Libby Maxwell and husband, Gene, all of Boone, and Priscilla Wade and husband, Russell, of Wilkesboro; brother, Adrian Goins and wife, Belinda, of Boone; grandchildren, Sierra, Jessica and John Winkler; and great-grandchildren, Briana Winkler, Maury Allen, Briana Williams and McKenzie Currence; and host of nieces and nephews also survive.

James had many friends at the NC Department of Transportation and the Boone area. He will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roger Winkler, and one sister, Pat White.

Funeral services were conducted 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Bishop R. C. Bryant, the Rev. Chris Eidse, the Rev. Joe Gray and the Rev. Wally Harriston.

The family received friends 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, one hour prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Burial, with Military Honors provided by the American Legion Post 130 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, followed at Clarissa Hill Cemetery.
