Gladys Viola Bowers

Ms. Gladys Viola Bowers, 93, of Milton Brown Heirs Road, Boone, passed away Tuesday morning, Dec. 18, 2012, at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation.

Born Oct. 22, 1919, in Watauga County, she was the daughter of the late Blaine and Dortha Coffey Phillips. Gladys was a retired Certified Nursing Assistant.

She is survived by two daughters, Karlene Grow and husband, Paul, of Eustis, Fla., and Janette Carswell of Boone; one son, David Ellis and wife, Nina, of Denver, Colo.; one sister, Stella Trivette and husband, Harvey, of Boone; 14 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren also survive.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one son, Bill Ellis; six sisters, Ercell Whisnant, Vercie Phillips, Vestia Woodring, Ella Brown, Mary Winebarger, Alma Phillips; three brothers, Glen, Charles and William "Jud" Phillips; and one granddaughter, Amber Waters.

Funeral services for Ms. Gladys Viola Bowers will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Bruce Miller and the Rev. Boyd Whisnant. Burial will be in the Brown¡Çs Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2 to 3 p.m. at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.
