Frances W. Roberts

Frances W. Roberts, 91, of Marble, died on Sunday night, Jan. 13, 2013, at her home.

She was a native of Butler, Tenn. Frances was the first Musical graduate from Appalachian State University. Her husband honored her by endowing a scholarship in her name at Appalachian State University. Frances worked within the NC Public School System before retiring from Cherokee County Schools in 1983 with 31 years of teaching. Frances was a community volunteer and worked in the early food programs. Frances served as an organist in the Sylva, Hayesville, and Murphy Episcopal Churches for many years. She was a member of the Church of the Messiah. Frances was a gifted artist, exceptional wife and mother, and loved and cared for all she knew.

She was the daughter of the late William Carl and Ovella Thomas Walker. She was preceded in death by a brother, Linney Walker; and two sisters, Edith Cavell Madison, and an infant sister.

Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Wilbur Leroy Roberts of Marble; three daughters, Phyllis Cavell Emanuel of Murphy, Patricia Payne of Brasstown, and Pamela Frances Owenby of Andrews; a son, William Leroy Roberts II and wife, Carol, of Cary; three grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at St. John's Cemetery in Valle Crucis, with the Rev. Allan McCaslin officiating. Pallbearers will be Charles and Robert Walker, George Madison, and Jerry Reynolds.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Frances Walker Roberts Endowment Fund, Appalachian State University, PO Box 32014, Boone, NC 28608-2014.
