Burdette Orin Myers

Burdette Orin Myers, 83, of Avon Park, Fla., passed away Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, in Sebring, Fla.

He was born March 10, 1930, to George W. and Alice (Schmelling) Myers in Wabeno, Wis., and had been a resident of Avon Park since 1973, coming from Miami, Fla. He was a pastry chef and was of the Lutheran faith.

Burdette was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Philippine Sea CV-47 and the USS Pickaway APA-222 from July 2, 1947 to March 7, 1952. He felt fortunate to have sailed with Admiral Byrd. He was an active member of the Avon Park VFW; Loyal Order of the Moose; the American Legion and the NRA.

He was very artistic, enjoyed working with stained glass, and also loved music and played several instruments. He built his own cabin in North Carolina and enjoyed gardening and sharing his produce with his neighbors. He was an avid Packers fan and enjoyed making moonshine and sharing it with family and friends. As a pastry chef, he was known worldwide for his pecan sticky buns. He loved his family and his Springer Spaniels.

Burdette was preceded in death by his parents; brother, George Wayne Myers; first wife, Bonnie Jean Myers; daughter, Suzanne (Nano) Myers and granddaughter, BreAnne McDonald.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Myers; sister, Eileen (Dave) DeNoble; brother, Gerald (Jeanette) Myers; and daughters, Charlene Edwards; Katricia (Tim) Phillips and Sengsong Thear (Andrew) Ticas Lin; sons, George (LeeAnn) Myers; Burt (Yvonne) Myers; Dennis (Suzanne) Myers; Dwayne (Madeline) Myers; Ben (Michelle) Myers; Richard McDonald; Michael (Jackie) McDonald; Greg (Lynn) McDonald, and Chris (Marina) McDonald; 30 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Burdette will be tremendously missed by his family and many, many friends in Avon Park and Blowing Rock. Dad and Grandpa, "We love you very much and will always remember what you taught us about life, adventure, taking risks and loving."

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
