J.D. Phillips

Mr. J.D. Phillips, 103, of Boone, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation in Boone.

Mr. Phillips was born Feb. 20, 1910, in Ashe County, a son of the late Benjamin Harrison Phillps and Julia Woodruff Phillips. He was a retired owner and builder of apartment rentals. Mr. Phillips was of the Baptist Faith, a Mason and Shriner.

Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Brona Elledge Phillips of the home; three daughters, Mary P. Moretz of Boone, J. Ann Mikeal of Aurora, Colo., and June P. South and husband, Frank, of Boone. He is also survived by six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, two nieces, and one nephew.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Tom Phillips, and two sons-in-law, Max Mikeal and Cecil Moretz.

Funeral services for J.D. Phillips were conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body lay in state at the chapel from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Officiating were the Rev. Dr. Larry Young and the Rev. Gary Watson. Burial followed in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family received friends from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 950 W Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
