Woolly worm offers season predictions

by Staff Reports

A woolly worm named Lickety Split won the races at the 35th Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk on Saturday.

As is the custom, forecaster Tommy Burleson used the worm's colors and stripes to release this forecast for the winter:

— Beginning on Dec. 22, winter will open with four weeks of snowy, cold weather.
— Week 5 of winter will feature light snow and cool temperatures.
— Weeks 6 through 11 will bring normal temperatures.
— Week 12 will be unusual, with an ice storm possible.
— The final week of winter, week 13, will be cold and snowy.

Lickety Split's "handler," Tammy Watson of Belmont, earned $1,000 for her worm's narrow victory in the final race Saturday in Banner Elk.
