Areas east of Boone and West Jefferson can expect an inch or less of accumulation, but there is a possibility of 2 to 4 inches of snow on the western slopes.
Mainly the western slopes will be affected by snow, blowing snow and bitter wind chills overnight Thursday, the NWS said.
Rain beginning on Thursday will change to snow early in the evening, lasting until about daybreak on Friday.
Temperatures will drop from near freezing to into the teens by Friday morning.
Winds may gust up to 55 mph and may cause scattered power outages. Wind chill readings could drop below zero by Friday morning.
Travel may be difficult and drivers should be prepared for hazardous conditions and limited visibilities, and slick roads from snow and blowing snow.
Report snowfall amounts, ice accumulation and wind damage by calling 1 (866) 215-4324 to the NWS.
