Water main breaks Thursday night
by Allison Haver
Motorists trying to access Faculty Street in Boone Thursday night experienced some difficulties.
Around 6 p.m. Thursday, the town of Boone's public utilities department responded to a report of a water main break on Faculty Street behind Blockbuster.
According to Public Utilities Superintendent
Jack Harmon, the break most likely occurred when the ground shifted due to
recent weather conditions and increased pressure on the water mainline.
Ten water department responders worked for about four hours in freezing temperatures to gain control of the break.
"With temperatures as cold as last night (Thursday), we try to have enough personnel present at the incident so they can rotate out," Harmon said. "We try not to have a guy out there working more than 10 to 15 minutes at a time."
