Watauga unemployment at 6.3 percent in October

Watauga County's unemployment rate ticked up to 6.3 percent in October from the previous month's rate of 6.1 percent. But compared with last year, the October rate is 1.2 percentage points lower, according to N.C. Department of Commerce data.
Watauga's unemployment rate was the 14th lowest in the state and lower than its neighboring northwestern North Carolina counties.
The unemployment rate in Avery was 7.8 percent, Caldwell was 8.3 percent, Wilkes was 8.5 percent and Ashe was 8.7 percent.
The county with the lowest unemployment rate was Chatham, at 4.7 percent, while Scotland County had the highest jobless rate at 14.4 percent.
