The unemployment rate in Watauga County continues to fall, according to figures released by the N.C. Department of Commerce last week. The November rate was 5.7 percent, down from 6.3 percent in October.
Watauga was among 91 North Carolina counties that experienced decreased rates in November, the department said. The county's jobless rate is also down compared to a year earlier, when it was 8 percent.
The state unemployment rate was 6.9 percent.
All but one of the surrounding counties also saw decreases in November but continue to have higher unemployment rates than Watauga. The rates were 8.1 percent in Ashe, 8.2 percent in Avery (an increase from 7.8 percent in October), 7.5 percent in Caldwell and 7.8 percent in Wilkes.
