Watauga jobless rate at 6.4 percent in January

The percentage of the Watauga County labor force seeking employment increased from December to January of this year, rising from 5.6 to 6.4 percent, according to the N.C. Department of Commerce.
But the rate was more than three percentage points lower than January 2013, when unemployment was at 9.5 percent in the county.
In surrounding counties, the January unemployment rate was 9.5 percent in Ashe, 8.4 percent in Avery, 7.6 percent in Caldwell and 7.9 percent in Wilkes.
The North Carolina unemployment rate was 7 percent in January.
