With only a couple of weeks left until showtime, the 125 Watauga High School students involved in this year's spring musical, "The Sound of Music," are working to ensure everything will be ready when the curtain rises.

Under the direction of Watauga High School drama instructors Sarah Miller and Zach Walker, students involved in the production have already had 20 rehearsals and have eight more rehearsals to go.

"Watauga High School has put on a spring musical almost every year since 1990," Miller said.
While this is Miller's ninth year at Watauga High School, Walker joined WHS this year as the new drama teacher.

"It is so nice to work and co-direct with Mr. Walker on this," Miller said.

The drama instructors wanted to choose a musical that neither one had directed before, and with the help of the arts department chose 'The Sound of Music.'

"With 33 years of experience between us, it was not so easy to find something we had never done before," Miller said.

Besides Miller and Walker, other WHS teachers are involved with different aspects of the musical.

Lisa Combs director of choral music, Tim Walker director of instrumental music, band, Will Selle director of instrumental music, orchestra, and Jason Matthews from construction technology make up the additional departments involved with the production.

For several students, this is their first time participating, but for others a spring musical has been a part of their entire high school careers.

This is the fourth year for WHS senior Sidney Ginn, who will play Maria. Ginn said she grew up watching "The Sound of Music" and used to sing the songs with her family.

"It's very special for me to be playing Maria," Ginn said.

For Evan Jones, a junior, who will play Captain Von Trapp, this is his second year participating in a spring musical and is his first year in a leading role.

Walker's 8-year-old daughter, Lucy, will also be in the musical as the youngest Von Trapp, Gretl.

The production will be held at Watauga High School's Ross Auditorium at 7 p.m. April 3 to 5. Tickets will go on sale on March 27 and will be $10 per person.
