WCS considers naming field for Leigh Wallace
by Kellen Moore
The Watauga County Board of Education
will consider a request Monday to name the high school lacrosse field
"Wallace Field" after teacher and coach Leigh Cooper Wallace.
Wallace, 43, died unexpectedly last month after a brief illness.
In a letter to the board, WHS Principal Marshall Gasperson wrote: "I make
this recommendation based on Coach Wallace's service in the areas of physical
education, health education and athletics at Watauga High School. Through hard
work and intensive motivation she has contributed greatly to past successes of
our cross country and track programs. As the inaugural coach of the WHS women's
lacrosse team, Coach Wallace successfully led the transition of the program
from a club team to NCHSAA sanctioned interscholastic sport."
If the board approves the recommendation, it will need to consider whether to
waive its fee schedule for facility naming approved last year.
