WASU joins iHeartRadio

by Lauren K. Ohnesorge

Appalachian State University's radio station, 90.5 WASU FM, is among the first 13 college stations added to the new iHeartRadio, a digital radio service from Clear Channel Media and Entertainment.

The only college station from North Carolina added to the Clear Channel list, WASU (http://wasurocks.com) focuses its content on alternative rock.

“Last fall, we were talking about how we could add more local and diverse content into iHeartRadio and we identified some leading college radio stations across the country based on reviews over the last several years and the quality of the content,” senior vice president Larry Linietsky said. “Appalachian State was one of the schools we first reached out to and the school jumped on really quickly.”

WASU program director Joel Gillis said WASU was contacted in December.

“It's one of those things you just jump on,” he said. “Now you can listen to WASU anywhere as long as you have a computer or a cellphone.”

IHeartRadio is a free application and website that offers a directory of “live, real radio stations,” Linietsky said.

Additionally, listeners can create their own radio station from an artist or song.

Nearly 850 stations from 150 cities make up the iHeartRadio network.

“They've developed such a great platform and to be adding college radio on top of that, to have WASU as one of the inaugural college stations, it's just awesome,” Gillis said.

The announcement comes as WASU is approaching its 40th anniversary in April.

Gillis credits listener support with WASU's accolades, such as last  year's MTV Shoulda Coulda Woodie Award.

“Our listeners are awesome,” he said.

ASU's communications program trains students to create quality content, he said.

“We're training the future of the broadcast industry,” he said. “The school gives us all the tools we need.”

IHeartRadio (http://iHeartRadio.com) has 238 million listeners in the United States.
