Valdese man arrested after Sunday chase

by Kellen Moore

Blowing Rock police arrested a Valdese man early Sunday after a more than one-hour pursuit that included officers from six agencies.

Officers arrested Travis Eugene Clark, 31, of Valdese, when the vehicle pursuit ended and he fled briefly on foot near U.S. 321 in Caldwell County, according to Sgt. Stacey L. Miller of the Blowing Rock Police Department.

The incident began when Officer Matthew Royal and Miller attempted to stop a 1995 Saturn whose plate had been reported stolen from the Newton area, Miller said.

The vehicle initially stopped on U.S. 321 near Aho Road but took off toward Boone as Royal approached.

Officers pursued the vehicle toward Boone, where Boone police were waiting at Fairway Drive to provide assistance. But the suspect made a U-turn just before Niley Cook Road, Miller said.

The Watauga County Sheriff's Office joined the pursuit in the Blowing Rock area before it crossed into Caldwell County.

At the foot of the mountain, the chase continued onto Kirby Mountain Road for about eight to 10 miles to where a trooper from the N.C. Highway Patrol was waiting, Miller said.

The suspect then made another U-turn and headed back toward Watauga County.

As the chase continued, the Lenoir Police Department and Caldwell County Sheriff's Office also joined the pursuit. At times, the suspect drove well above the speed limit, said Chief Eric Brown of the Blowing Rock Police Department.

After the suspect's tires were flattened by the authorities, he continued to flee — at a much slower pace — through the Happy Valley area.

He drove north in the southbound lane of U.S. 321 briefly before turning onto Creekside Place and crashing into a ditch, Miller said.

After a short chase on foot, Clark was captured just after 3 a.m. and charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, driving the wrong way on a dual-lane road, possession of stolen property, aggressive driving and driving while license revoked, according to court information. He was issued a $25,000 secured bond and an April 19 court date, Brown said.

Caldwell County officers also were expected to press other charges.

The suspect's vehicle was deemed a total loss due to the disintegrated tires and body damage, Miller said. The vehicle was impounded and will be turned over to the Watauga County sheriff under the felony speeding to elude vehicle seizure law, nicknamed “Run and You're Done.”

If Clark is convicted of the felony offense, the vehicle will likely by auctioned and any proceeds given to the county schools, according to the law that went into effect Dec. 1, 2011.

A Caldwell County Sheriff's Office vehicle also was damaged during the pursuit when a deer struck the passenger's side.

Finally, Royal was treated and released from Watauga Medical Center for minor injuries to his hands that occurred when he climbed through brush to reach the suspect.

Brown said it's rare for Blowing Rock police to be involved in such lengthy pursuits.

“It really ended very well,” he said.
