U.S. 421 wreck sends 5 to hospital

A collision in Vilas on Friday evening sent five people — including an infant — to the hospital, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred around 7:45 p.m. as a 2004 Jeep Liberty was turning left off Vanderpool Road onto U.S. 421, said Trooper D.R. Alexander of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

The Jeep pulled into the path of a 1999 Chevy Blazer traveling north toward Mountain City, Tenn., he said. The impact spun the Chevy and caused it to overturn, leaving the three occupants caught inside the vehicle.

The driver, 33-year-old Daniel Walker of Vilas, 28-year-old Jennifer Jewel and 6-month-old Abigail Walker were removed from the Chevy and taken to Watauga Medical Center, according to the accident report.

"The baby was fine — not a scratch on it," Alexander said.

The driver of the Jeep, 69-year-old Bobby Johnson, and passenger, 66-year-old Ruth Johnson, also were taken to Watauga Medical Center, and Alexander said it did not appear any of the injuries were life-threatening.

Bobby Johnson was cited for failure to yield right-of-way, he said.
