U.S. 421 designated Blue Star Memorial Highway
Blue Star Memorial Highways were originally started to honor World War II veterans but expanded in 1951 to include all men and women who have served or will serve in the U.S. armed forces.
Boone and Watauga County governments prepared resolutions last year in support of the highway, and the N.C. Board of Transportation approved the request in November 2012.
From left, Sam Halsey, Division 11 representative to the N.C. Board of Transportation, Boone Mayor Loretta Clawson and Watauga County Manager Deron Geouque gathered Monday for a presentation of the signs that will be visible along the highway.
"I think it's one way of showing appreciation of veterans past, present and future," Halsey said.
The actual signs will be larger than the replica shown.
