A man was airlifted after suffering a self-inflicted
gunshot wound early Tuesday morning in Zionville, according to the Watauga County Sheriff's Office.
Officers and medics responded to the 2200 block of Silverstone Road in Zionville just before 3:45 a.m. Capt. Dee Dee Rominger said the man was shot once in the chest with a handgun.
The victim was taken to Johnson City Medical Center in Tennessee by WINGS Air Rescue.
Sheriff Len Hagaman said early Tuesday that the injury was reported as an accident. Rominger said later that no one else was involved and that investigators do not suspect foul play.
The man was in stable condition late Tuesday afternoon, according to hospital spokeswoman Teresa Hicks.
