UPDATE: Vehicle break-in suspect caught

by Staff Reports

Police have identified and arrested a man suspected of recent vehicle break-ins in downtown Boone, a crime announced in a Crimestoppers alert and video Wednesday.

Drake Alexander Caldwell, 20, of Boone, was interviewed and charged with two counts of felony breaking and entering a vehicle, according to police.

Caldwell was issued a $3,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court July 29, police said.

"It is because of this video and the willingness of the public to help that this case was cleared so quickly," Boone Police Chief Dana Crawford said. "This should also remind citizens and visitors alike to be sure to lock your vehicles when you leave them."

Crimestoppers originally released this information Wednesday:

At approximately 12:15 a.m. June 25, the white man entered several vehicles near ECRS at 277 Howard Street, according to police. He was dressed in a blue shirt with the letters "DC" on the front, khaki shorts and a blue, flat-bill hat.

Anyone with information about this crime or any other is asked to call Crimestoppers at (828) 268-6959 or the Boone Police Department at (828) 268-6900.

All information will be kept confidential, and Crimestoppers pays rewards for information that leads to arrests, recovery of stolen property, seizure of drugs or the location of wanted persons.
