UPDATE: Motorbike rider killed in wreck

by Kellen Moore

The rider of a Kawasaki motorbike was killed Thursday afternoon in a nearly head-on accident on Old U.S. 421.

A white Ford Ranger pickup turning left from Old U.S. 421 onto Roby Greene Road crossed into the path of the green motorbike, said Trooper Joe Berrong of the N.C. Highway Patrol. Speed was not a factor, and witnesses said it appeared the pickup driver simply didn't see the rider, Berrong said.

The rider was 35-year-old Nathan Randall Grose of Wilkesboro, Berrong said.

Watauga Medics performed CPR on the rider on the way to the hospital, but he did not survive, said Craig Sullivan, director of Watauga Medics.

The driver of the pickup was identified as John Dewey Jarvis Jr., 82, of Boone, according to Berrong. He remained at the scene after the accident and did not have any visible injuries, although the air bag deployed in his vehicle.

Charges for Jarvis are pending, Berrong said.

Annie Jarvis, who lives at the corner of Old U.S. 421 and Roby Greene Road, said her ex-husband was on his way to visit her when the accident occurred.
