UPDATE: Luke Eggers nominated for elections board
by Kellen Short
Luke Eggers of Boone was appointed Wednesday for the third seat on the Watauga County Board of Elections.
Eggers said Wednesday he planned to accept the appointment and serve his two-year term. Eggers is a native of the area and said he had always been involved in local politics.
"I really felt like this was a good spot to try to make some positive things happen," he said.
Eggers recently completed an interim contract with Wilkes County Schools and now serves as a substitute teacher.
He is the younger brother of former Board of Elections member Stacy "Four" Eggers, who completed his fourth term this year. Four Eggers was among the three names the state Republican Party originally submitted to the state board this summer, according to information from Elections Specialist George McCue.
A Republican seat remained vacant after former nominee Jim Hastings declined the appointment. Republican Bill Aceto and Democrat Kathleen Campbell were sworn in July 16.
The State Board of Elections met via teleconference at 3 p.m. Wednesday to fill vacancies on six county elections boards, approving all recommendations unanimously. Vacancies also existed on the boards in Avery, Beaufort, Buncombe, Granville and Onslow counties.
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly named Stacy "Four" Eggers as the appointee. The story has been corrected.
