Truck overturns in Deep Gap wreck

Two adults and an 11-month-old baby were taken to the hospital after a collision Thursday involving a pickup truck and a car.

The wreck occurred around 12:30 p.m. on U.S. 421 in Deep Gap at the back entrance to Food Lion.

Trooper I.S. Collier said that a white Chevrolet pickup truck was in the U-turn lane when the driver decided to instead turn right into the Food Lion entrance, cutting across both of the northbound lanes.

That action took the truck into the path of a maroon Kia sedan driving northbound, which crashed into the passenger side of the truck with enough force to overturn the truck.

The driver of the truck, 47-year-old Terry Dixon of Cleveland, N.C., and his passenger, Brian Weaver, were not injured.

The driver of the Kia, 34-year-old Shawn Lang of Boone, passenger Shelley Rebecca Buisan, 18, of Boone, and the 11-month-old child were taken to Watauga Medical Center, Collier said. The baby did not have any visible injuries.

Dixon was cited for unsafe movement, Collier said. He said that the didn't see the Kia as he changed lanes.

"I'm just tickled to death that baby's all right," Dixon said.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly named the passenger in Lang's vehicle. The story has been corrected to match N.C. Highway Patrol reports.
