Tenn. men charged with thefts

by Staff Reports

Two Tennessee men have been charged with thefts that occurred in Vilas in December, the sheriff’s office announced Tuesday.

High Country Recycling reported Dec. 12 that someone had entered the business at 6400 U.S. 421 North in Vilas and stolen about $300 worth of scrap metal and copper, according to the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office.

Just more than a week later, on Dec. 20, Ward’s Automotive at 134 Willowdale Church Road in Vilas reported that a 1999 Ford F-150 truck, $150, radiators, aluminum wheels and a vehicle diagnostic scanner had been stolen.

Working with the Johnson County (Tenn.) Sheriff’s Office, investigators located and arrested two suspects:

— Kevin Mark Buchanan, 41, of 3933 U.S. 421 South, Mountain City, Tenn., was charged with felony breaking and entering, felony larceny and felony larceny of a motor vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. Buchanan is still in custody with the Johnson County authorities and will be extradited to North Carolina for a court date Jan. 24.

— Jacob Ray Rash, 22, of 828 Drakes Creek, Mountain City, Tenn., was charged with felony breaking and entering, felony larceny and felony larceny of a motor vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. Rash remains in jail with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and will be extradited to North Carolina for a court date Jan. 24.

The sheriff’s office located the Ford F-150 truck and the diagnostic scanner and returned those items to Ward’s Automotive.
