Sugar Mountain stays open one more week
The ski resort is planning to remain open through Sunday, March 31, to allow skiers and snowboarders to enjoy the recent burst of winter weather.
Sugar Mountain marketing director Kim Jochl said last week the resort would wait and see whether conditions allowed it to stay open into this week. On Monday, the Sugar Mountain website reported that five inches of fresh snow had fallen there.
Meanwhile, Appalachian Ski Mountain and Beech Mountain Resort have closed for the season. Beech celebrated its final day Saturday with specials, music and festivities, while App closed Sunday after its annual Meltdown Games. Appalachian Ski Mountain is already looking forward to Friday, Nov. 15 -- its scheduled opening date for the 2013-14 season.
"We understand that it can be hard to comprehend why we closed when we are still experiencing natural snow," Beech Mountain Marketing Director Talia Freeman posted Monday on the resort's Facebook page. "We had a great season and were able to maintain consistent conditions, even on our closing day. We feel confident that we made the right decision to close when we did."
