Stony Fork fire destroys mobile home

An unoccupied mobile home was destroyed Monday afternoon by a fire in the Stony Fork community that also burned some of the surrounding forest.

Firefighters from Deep Gap, Champion and Fleetwood fire departments, as well as the Watauga Rescue Squad, were called to the location off Wildcat Road around 3:30 p.m.

The fire destroyed the 1970s-style mobile home, which Katie Doster said sat unoccupied near her house on Clyde Lane and needed to be torn down.

"It needed to be gone, but that was kind of quicker than anticipated," she said.

A man working outside near the structure said he was going to pull his truck alongside the trailer when he spotted a metal pipe in the way. He said he gave the pipe a whack and it sparked, starting the fire.

Chief Mark Parsons said he had no further explanation for why the fire would have started in that way. He said he left the official cause as "undetermined" given the bizarre circumstances.

The fire burned about a 100-foot radius of woods around the structure, Parsons said.
