Smoke, odor reported at courthouse
by Anna Oakes
The Boone Fire Department responded around 6 p.m. Monday to a report of smoke and a light odor on the third floor of the Watauga County Courthouse building.
Boone Fire Marshal Ronnie Marsh said the smoke and odor seemed to be coming from a rooftop HVAC unit, which the department shut down. Marsh said county maintenance employees would investigate the issue further.
A night employee at the county building made the report. The department's ladder truck was deployed to ensure firefighters had access off of the roof if stairwells became impassable, Marsh explained. The building's alarm sounded until firefighters cleared the building.
