A second Democrat has filed to challenge Republican incumbent Dan Soucek for his N.C. Senate seat.
Jim Sponenberg of Lenoir filed Tuesday as a candidate for the District 45 seat, which Soucek has held for two terms. Democrat Josh Brannon of Boone has also filed for election to the office.
In addition, Kurt D. Michael of Boone on Monday joined what is becoming a crowded race for the Watauga County Board of Education.
The race for Kay Hagan's U.S. Senate continues to heat up, with five Republicans and two Democrats, including the incumbent. Hagan and Democrat Will Stewart of Hampstead filed for the seat on Monday, with Republican Jim Snyder of Lexington filing for the race on Tuesday. Republican N.C. House Speaker Thom Tillis has also announced his candidacy for the seat, but he had yet to file as of Tuesday.
Filing continues through Friday, Feb. 28, at noon.
