SUV drives off Bamboo Road embankment

The driver of a 2004 Ford Explorer traveled to the right off of Bamboo Road and came to rest about 25 feet down an embankment near Bradford Mobile Home Park around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday.

Joseph Holbrook, 66, of Blowing Rock, was transported to Watauga Medical Center with neck pain but no other serious injuries, said State Highway Patrol Trooper M.A. Goldsmith. Emergency responders from Boone Fire Department used jaws of life equipment to pry open the driver's side door, and the victim was then transported to a stretcher and into a Watauga Medics ambulance.

Goldsmith said the driver and witnesses said Holbrook dropped off the right shoulder of the roadway and was unable to correct the movement on the embankment. Speed was not determined to be a factor, and no citations were issued, the trooper said.

"He said he was coming back from a long trip," added Goldsmith.

The vehicle had a state government-issued license plate and was registered to the N.C. Division of Motor Fleet Management, Goldsmith said.

The Watauga County Sheriff's Office also responded to the accident, which backed up traffic on both lanes of Bamboo Road Tuesday evening.
