STATE CHAMPION: Kostis wins 132-pound 4-A title

by Staff Reports

GREENSBORO -- Watauga's Demetreus Kostis has seen and heard about the success his family has had in wrestling.

Kostis added his chapter to his family's memory book Saturday when he beat Garrett Hinton 2-1 to claim the state 4-A championship in the 132-pound weight classification.

Kostis executed a reversal in the second period to take a 2-0 lead on Hinton, who attends Fayetteville Jack Britt. After several attempts, Hinton escaped from Kostis to earn a point and pull to within 2-1.

From there, Kostis had to avoid a takedown to seal the victory.

"It feels awesome," Kostis said before accepting his award for winning. "If feels good. All the hard work I put in last year -- to come back here and win is a great feeling."

Kostis beat Kollin Wade of Cary 5-4 Friday night to reach the finals. Wade is the No. 1 seed from the mideast region. His individual record slips to 43-4.

Kostis ran his record to 52-1. He is the No. 1 seed from the west regional, which he won by winning four matches. He finishes his prep career with an overall record of 175-21 in four years wrestling at Watauga.

Kostis had reached the state finals in all of his four years at Watauga, but had never won a state title. Last season, he made the quarterfinals because of a forfeit, but lost his next two matches and was eliminated.

He felt like he attoned for that when he beat Hinton, who is the No. 1 seed from the east bracket. Hinton finished 47-4 this season.

"The first period was dead even," Kostis said. "We were really going after each other. In the second period, I chose down (position) and I knew what he had. I reversed him and went in front 2-0."

Kostis started the tournament with a 15-2 victory over Raleigh Sanderson's David Losada. Kostis followed Friday morning with a 9-3 win over Joe Mondragon of Wilmington Ashley.

Wade finished in third place after beating David Cline from Concord Robinson 10-2. Mondragon finished fifth with a 5-3 win over David Crumby of Southeast Guilford.
