SBI finishes shooting investigation
The State Bureau of Investigation has completed its investigation into the officer-involved shooting that left two men dead in July.
SBI agents delivered their report to District Attorney Jerry Wilson on Friday, SBI spokeswoman Jennifer Canada said via email Tuesday.
Their reports are not public records in North Carolina, she said.
Wilson could not be reached Tuesday, but investigator Sherry Perry said he expected to release a statement this week.
The investigation concerned an incident July 26 in which Deputies William Mast and Preston Russell responded to a 911 call at 2130 Hardin Road in Deep Gap.
A resident of the home, 33-year-old Mitchell Trivette, fired at the officers shortly after their arrival, striking Mast, according to the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office.
The officers returned fire, striking Trivette three times.
Both Mast and Trivette died of their injuries.
