Purlear woman dies in wreck on U.S. 421 in Deep Gap
Francesca Spencer, 66, of Purlear, was killed instantly, said Trooper J.G. Crane of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
The accident happened just before 9 a.m. when a light-colored Jeep traveling south hit a tractor-trailer turning left from Old U.S. 421 onto U.S. 421 North.
The Jeep passed under the trailer, and the woman was ejected from the vehicle, Crane said.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, John Henderson, 50, of New York state, was not injured in the accident. He was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to yield right-of-way, Crane said.
The accident left pieces of the Jeep and items from inside the vehicle strewn several hundred feet down the road. The mangled frame of the vehicle stopped in a ditch on the right side of the southbound lanes.
