Public input sought on Boone bike plan

by Anna Oakes

A steering committee is currently seeking public comments from the community to provide input on a Bicycle Transportation Plan for the town of Boone.

The plan will guide the town, N.C. Department of Transportation and other local and regional partners in improving existing infrastructure and constructing new bicycle facilities. The town received a $45,000 grant from NCDOT in 2012 to develop the plan.

The steering committee first met April 22 to establish the town's vision and goals to guide the planning process, and the committee is scheduled to meet again June 19.

A public comment form is available via a link on the plan's website, http://www.boonebikeplan.com, or at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/bikeboone. Surveys may be completed online via Survey Monkey or printed and returned to town staff.

In addition, two public engagement events are planned. The first takes place Saturday, June 15, at the Watauga County Farmers' Market, which is held from 8 a.m. to noon on Horn in the West Drive in Boone. A second event will be scheduled in fall 2013.

"The meeting at the farmers' market will be an informational booth/table for folks to drop by for more information or comment forms/ suggestions," said Eric Gustaveson, Boone facilities maintenance superintendent.

Gustaveson said the comment form will be available throughout most of the planning process, with a draft plan anticipated in August or September. Alta Greenways is the consultant contracted for the project.
