Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney holds a slight lead over Democratic President Barack Obama among North Carolina voters, according to a poll conducted by Burlington-based Elon University Aug. 25 to 30.

“If the presidential election were held today, 47 percent of likely voters would cast their ballots for Romney while 43 percent would support Obama. Six percent of respondents don’t know or are undecided,” the Elon University Poll announced in a statement Monday.

The poll surveyed 1,089 likely voters and has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

When asked about the most important issue in making their presidential choice, 48 percent of respondents said the economy, 16 percent said health care, 13 percent said the federal budget deficit and 10 percent said education.

In the same poll, 52 percent of respondents would vote for Republican Pat McCrory for governor, while Democrat Walter Dalton would take 37 percent of the vote. Eleven percent were undecided about the governor’s race.
