Police arrest two suspected burglars

by Kellen Moore

Boone police arrested two Asheville residents Tuesday in connection with a break-in on Sunset Drive, as well as a third person on drug charges.
Officers encountered a suspicious vehicle in the early morning hours on Azalea Lane and connected the driver, 20-year-old Shelby Nicole Phelps, to two other people who were located near Blowing Rock Road, according to the police department.
Further investigation led officers to a home on Sunset Drive, where they confirmed that electronics had been taken from the residence.
Grant Weldon Gousby, 19, and Owen Dean Alspaugh Jr., 19, were each charged with first-degree burglary, according to police.
Alpaugh also was charged with misdemeanor possession of stolen property.
Gousby and Alspaugh were issued an $85,000 secured bond and are scheduled to appear in court April 17, according to the police department.
Phelps was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and underage possession of alcohol. She was issued a $750 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court April 17.
Police have determined that there is no direct link between Tuesday's incident and numerous other break-ins at local businesses during the last month.
