Panel to discuss youth risk behaviors
Watauga County Schools will host a community meeting March 21 to discuss the current needs of young people as identified through the Youth Risk Behavior Survey.
The survey, last administered in fall 2012, asked about 1,130 high school students about their experiences with bullying, violence, sexual activity, and alcohol and drug use.
The YRBS has now been implemented three times with help from the Appalachian District Health Department, giving stakeholders an opportunity to begin to evaluate trends.
"We felt like the community really needed to know about what problems our youth were facing," said Board of Education member Delora Hodges.
Panelists will include Hodges, Superintendent David Kafitz, Student Services Director Clarissa Schmal and others.
Local agencies involved in youth work also have been invited to set up tables to share information about valuable services in the community.
The meeting will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 21 at the Watauga High School auditorium.
