NWS: Snow to continue overnight

by Anna Oakes

A white Halloween will greet High Country residents on Wednesday morning, as the National Weather Service forecasts light snow and periods of heavy snow to continue Tuesday night. The service's winter storm warning for the Boone area is in effect until 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Temperatures are projected to be in the low 30s Tuesday night, according to the NWS. Chris Fisher, meteorologist at the National Weather Service's Blacksburg, Va., station, said winds will remain "quite gusty" but not at speeds experienced Monday night. Winds will combine with cold temperatures to produce wind chills in the teens, the NWS said.

Overall, the NWS forecasts a total snow accumulation of six to 12 inches for the Boone area, with greater amounts at elevations higher than 4,000 feet. A NWS observer reported 5.6 inches in Boone at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Fisher said, and the Beech Mountain Police Department reported eight inches at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

A decision to cancel classes at Appalachian State University will likely be made between 5:30 and 6 a.m. Wednesday, University News Director Jane Nicholson said.
