N.C. sheriffs meet in Blowing Rock

Sheriffs from across North Carolina are gathering in Blowing Rock this week for the N.C. Sheriffs’ Association fall meeting.
Executive Vice President Eddie Caldwell said he expected about 60 of the 100 sheriffs to attend the event at Chetola Resort. The group also is expecting to welcome State Treasurer Janet Cowell, Secretary of State Elaine Marshall, SBI Director Greg McLeod and possibly Attorney General Roy Cooper, he said.
But the focus of the meeting is the training sessions, which began Tuesday afternoon and continue through Friday, Caldwell said. This session, the topics include working with sovereign nations, child abuse and custody issues, and illegal use of prescription drugs, he said.
“The other thing that’s important is it gives the sheriffs an opportunity to talk to one another about issues that are important,” Caldwell said.
The N.C. Sheriffs’ Association has met several times in Watauga County during the last 10 to 15 years, Caldwell said. It also holds an annual spring meeting in eastern North Carolina and a conference in July.
