NC fire crew sent to northern California
Twenty U.S. Forest Service employees from North Carolina left last week to help fight fires in northern California. The employees are members of a Type 2 Initial Attack Crew.
The crew will be flying out of Knoxville, Tenn., on Tuesday. The crew members will receive their assignment orders after arriving in California.
This is the first time in several years that a North Carolina-based U.S. Forest Service crew has been dispatched to fight fires in the western United States.
The U.S. Forest Service employees are based at the Nantahala, Pisgah and Uwharrie National Forests in North Carolina.
Stevin Westcott, Forest Service spokesman, said 19 of the 20 crew members are from Western North Carolina.
